Social media continues to expose bigots and racists for who they really are. Multiple people across the country have been exposed and fired after posting videos of racist acts they committed on social media. The videos may be deleted, but not without first spreading across multiple platforms.

A couple in Temecula, California, is among those facing consequences and backlash after posting a now-deleted TikTok video in which they made racist comments about Asian Americans. The couple has been identified as Sandra and Roger Miller.

As a result of the video, Sandra, an employee at Linfield Christian School in Temecula, has reportedly been fired. Her husband, Roger, an employee for the city of Coronado in San Diego County, has been placed on administrative leave.

In the viral video with millions of views, the couple consistently used racial slurs and blamed Asians “for starting COVID.”

According to ABC News affiliate KABC, the video was taken at a parking garage at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. Two women were shopping when the couple started making racist remarks and saying things like, “Stop spreading COVID.”

They even commented on communism and touched a stair railing to which Sandra said: “I’m gonna die from all the germs.”

The original video has since been deleted, but was re-uploaded to TikTok and other social media platforms by others to spread awareness.

“America is a free country,” Sandra is heard saying in the video before getting into a car. “Go back to China!” The couple is then seen showing the videographer the middle finger before driving off.

“We’re not even Chinese, by the way,” a voice behind the camera is heard saying.

After being made aware of the video, Linfield Christian School released a statement on Instagram noting that the district had fired Sandra “immediately.”

“After speaking with Ms. Miller regarding the incident, Linfield has terminated her employment immediately. The statements made by Ms. Miller do not reflect the beliefs of Linfield, are inconsistent with Linfield’s mission statement, and fail to meet the behavior Linfield expects employees to model for its students,” the statement said.

Although Roger is not heard making any racist remarks, he has been accused of making comments that led to the confrontation that was recorded. Additionally, he is being criticized for staying quiet as his wife perpetuated racism. Silence is compliance.

In a statement, Coronado City Manager Tina Friend noted that since he is an employee of the city of Colorado, Roger has been placed on leave pending an “independent, full, and fair investigation.”

“We acted immediately, and the person involved has been placed on administrative leave pending an independent, full, and fair investigation. Our City’s culture and values are core to who we are and that culture is based on professionalism, service and respect. We take matters such as this extremely seriously and the City has zero-tolerance for all forms of discrimination,” Friend said.

The racist rant is the latest incident to depict the real ongoing pandemic America faces, racism. Almost every day a new incident of Asian hate makes headlines. Violence against the Asian American Pacific Islander community has increased heavily since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest data on hate crimes against Asian Americans is the most alarming. Released by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, a compilation of hate crime data from across the country found that anti-Asian hate crimes rose by 339% in 2021 compared with 2020, Daily Kos reported.

“The level of animosity towards the Asian community and the feeling that we are the cause of the pandemic is still very real,” Connie Chung Joe, CEO of Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles, said in a statement to KABC.

“I would say to this couple, I wish you understood the gravity of your words,” Joe added. “I wish you understood that when you say to an Asian American ‘Go back to China,’ what you’re saying to all Asian Americans who watch this video is that we are not ever American enough.”
