Former President Donald Trump’s attorney called her a “sick person” who has “weaponized” her role. Trump’s son, Eric Trump, compared her prosecutorial priorities to “what you would expect from” Russia and Venezuela. But over here, we call New York Attorney General Letitia James a public servant doing her job.

James is investigating accusations that Trump lied about the value of his real estate assets to acquire better loans and lied again about their value to avoid paying due taxes. The properties in question include the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago, according to Newsweek. James’ office and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office are also working together to investigate felony tax fraud charges against the Trump Organization and its CFO Allen Weisselberg, who has denied claims he avoided taxes on some $1.7 million worth of incentives.

Donald Trump filed a federal lawsuit against James last month to stop her investigation, and he’s now attempting to get a preliminary injunction until the suit is worked out in court, ABC News reported. The former president is also asking that James recuse herself from a civil investigation. “Letitia James has displayed a shocking irreverence for her prosecutorial ethics and has routinely exploited her position to malign the former president by turning an unfounded investigation into a public spectacle,” attorneys stated in Trump’s motion. “In doing so, she has exposed the vindictive and self-serving nature of her actions.”

Trump’s attorneys also said this of James’ civil investigation:

It’s unclear if Trump or his team realizes it’s James’ actual job to prosecute criminals. She doesn’t just play a prosecutor on TV.

“The Trump Organization has continually sought to delay our investigation into its business dealings. To be clear, neither Donald Trump nor the Trump Organization get to dictate if and where they will answer for their actions,” she said in a statement obtained by ABC News. “Our investigation will continue undeterred because no one is above the law, not even someone with the name Trump.”

The former president’s children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, have been subpoenaed by James’ office after it indicated neither would cooperate.
