Connect! Unite! Act! is a weekly series that seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups meet regularly to socialize, get out the vote, support candidates, and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers that be. Visit us every week to see how you can get involved!

It doesn’t take a genius to understand that for decades, the Republican plan was to demonize abortion, rail against it, work to ban it, and vilify those who tried to protect it. They would overturn judges, undo set law, and do anything possible to make getting an abortion difficult to get—that is, short of overturning Roe v. Wade. Doing that would cause a different problem for Republicans. You go from being the group of people who pet leopards through cages to the group who finds the leopard is eating your face off.

For decades, Democratic candidates have declared this day could happen. We’ve warned that this possibility was out there. Voters didn’t pay as much attention as they should have because they thought, “Well, it doesn’t matter, the courts will save this.” A larger and larger percentage of the population simply doesn’t remember an America without choice.

When the court this week decided to let the law stand in Texas, effectively overturning the elements of Roe v. Wade and access to abortion for millions in the Lone Star State, it opened up the gateway for other conservative states to consider similar legislation. It also led to a rally cry for Democratic senators to end the filibuster and move on House legislation to protect women’s rights.

What is happening now in Texas, and the status of Republicans who denied this would happen, has only one reminder for me, and it’s a scene from my favorite famous film.

Republicans who said they didn’t think this was going to happen must be shocked, absolutely shocked I say, to learn that the plan to end women’s rights was being made in cloakrooms around the country. Just absolutely shocked.

What comes next in the fight for women’s rights? Connect and let us know your thoughts!
